Popple Camp Wildlife Management Area

Route 101, Phillipston & Petersham, MA

A place to find the East Branch of the Swift River running free, its valley rising into sloping forests.

Description:

Many miles further south, the Swift River runs into a dam that turns it into the Quabbin Reservoir. Here, however, the East Branch runs free, its valley rising into sloping forests. Stocked trout and aquatic fur-bearers swim in the river, and native brook trout frisk in Popple Camp, Bigelow, and Shattuck Brooks or in the numerous beaver impoundments. Hunters seek grouse, woodcock, turkey, and stocked pheasant, as well as deer, coyote, snowshoe hare, and cottontail rabbit. Numerous nongame species also call the area home, some in the open marsh and brushy fields that dot the woodland. An old road leading from the parking area on Route 101 leads down to the river. Across the street from the 1,300-acre Popple Camp Wildlife Management Area is the larger, 3,300-acre Phillipston WMA.

Directions:

From Rte. 2 take Exit 21 and follow Rtes. 2AW and 101S. Continue south on Rte 101 after the split, to WMA on right, about a mile before the Phillipston/Petersham town line.
