This carving was inspired by the eagles seen flying over the Quabbin. They brought back memories of the golden eagles of the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia where Cayoni grew up.
The eagle feather is a very highly honored object to the Creek Indian. Cayoni tells the story of how he obtained his feather during his initiation as a brave in the 1930’s.
“You have to dig a hole and sit in it. My uncle placed sticks over the top to disguise the hole. A fish was laid on top to lure the eagle. He swooped down and lit on the sticks and was looking at the fish. That’s when I reached through and grabbed him by the tail feathers, and all hell broke loose. The sticks moved and he damn near came into the pit with me. He was screaming like hell and took off. I got two feathers, actually. One I gave to my grandfather. The other one was the feather I got when I became a brave.” -- Cayoni
