David's ambition as a young man was to understand the world around him and then to be able to respond to that world appropriately. However, as he explains, "The necessities of life, like food and shelter always conspired against that aim." After a stint making prototype cars for General Motors he decided needed something more fulfilling. "Making Art on my own became my way of exploring and understanding the world, but the Art world of America seemed so nutty to me that it was like taking a step forward and two back, being an 'Artist' didn't work."

So he spent a year in Nicaragua and El Salvador where his work included helping teens in a carpentry shop through the local church. This introduction to working with wood led him into his current work with wood, sundials, and computers. "The first two, besides being beautiful and elegant, have a common thread: they have layers and layers of meaning beneath a deceptively simple surface. Uncovering those layers is a very healthy and satisfying way to use my time." As for the computer he adds, "It reminds me that I can never really understand."

David creates sundials and traditional carved signs of all kinds. While he has used a variety of materials he encourages his customers to use locally grown wood. His sundials sit either horizontal or vertical and are custom made for their geographic location.
